Rebecca Millsop is an artist, philosopher, and pedagogue based in Brooklyn, NY. Working across painting, digital processes, pen plotting, and image manipulation, her work investigates self-construction: how identity accumulates and erodes over time, how we come to know ourselves through relation to others, and what it means to labor toward a self that is never fixed. The work proceeds through systematic processes of addition and subtraction, building and stripping back, treating the surface as a site where identity is made and unmade.
She trained in the New Genres program at the San Francisco Art Institute before pursuing philosophy at UC Berkeley and MIT, where she completed her PhD with a focus on logic and aesthetics. She is currently Lecturer in the Philosophy of Art for Artist Commons, a year-long online program for early- and mid-career visuals artists looking to get serious about their work. Her goal is to help participants articulate frameworks for understanding their practices more deeply and the vocabulary to talk about it confidently with curators, collectors, and institutions.
Her work has been collected internationally.
